Moving is the biggest stressor hopefully these tips will make it run more smoothly.
Purchase permanent markers, QR code labels, medium moving boxes, clear bins with latch lids, photo storage bins
If you can afford it, definitely hire someone to pack you and move you, otherwise here are my best moving tips.
1. Purge. Purge. Purge . Don't move trash or stuff you can donate, throw it away and donate it. Do this a couple of times.
2. If you know you are moving months in advance start buying clear storage bins and labels.
3. Closer to moving time I suggest using your towels and sheets to wrap your fragile glasses and vases in.
4. Buy a QR code label system (like totescan), take photos of items in the boxes and use the label system to inventory and categorize your items.
5. Do not leave drawers packed because they will be pulled out for the move to make the items easier to carry and the stuff inside could get lost or damaged.
6. If using boxes tape the bottom of the boxes front to back and side to side.
7. Use a good tape gun, it will be a time saver.
8. Best tip: To help make the movers job easier buy colored tape or markers and label the rooms you are moving into a different color for each room, like purple for the main bedroom and yellow for the office. Label the boxes on the top and 2 sides with the matching room color it goes in, so the movers don't have to read anything they just match the color.
9. Keep your photos and temperature sensitive items, like record albums, with you or ship with a shipping company to make sure they are not sitting in the hot sun all day.
10. Pack your daily items(coffee, undies, toilet paper) and your valuables(jewelry, documents) separately and keep them with you, meaning all the time do not leave them in your car. and if you can only put items in the trunk or unseen from outside, so your vehicle is not a target for theft. Remember to keep your phone charger with you too.
11. If you are packing your own truck, do not pack any small items above the truck bed height, put large items in first and put small items in the spaces that are left and tie the items down across and diagonally, if it can move it can escape the vehicle.
12. Make sure all the items in the truck are taped shut well.
13. Oh yeah and count the total of boxes you have before you move and make sure it is the same you have when you arrive.
