Step 1: Learn the cues that your child has to go. For every child, this will be different from physically literally holding it to dancing or speeding up speech, etc.
Step 2: Check in with your child. Begin to discuss going potty and where they should be going in a conversational matter (without judging or shaming) and when you see your child giving cues ask if you child had to go potty and excitedly say great go potty in the potty! and start talking about the steps of going potty in the potty. You should lead them at a normal pace to the potty and if they don't make it there just conversationally say maybe next time we will make it all the way to the potty chair to go potty in the potty chair.
Step 3: When you have successfully made it to the potty sit with your child if they are frightened, heap lots of praise during and after. I do not recommend a tiny potty to go in because then you have to transition to the big potty, which is a whole other thing. You can get a potty seat that will shrink the size of the opening.
Step 4: repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat...
Step 5: If needed, get a big life-sized stuffed animal and have them teach it to go. Only do this step once you know your child really knows where to go potty.
Step 6: If necessary, put your child in underwear when they make a mess, unless while sleeping, and have them clean up their own messy underwear.
*Tips:
moms of boys get a slow closing lid. You do not want to create fear by getting appendages stuck in the lid
moms of girls teach them to wipe front to back
use the regular potty, getting a child to switch from mini potty to regular potty is a whole other drama you do not need
once they have pottying in the proper place down, then teach handwashing, rub those little hands together front and back for 2 happy birthday songs or the ABCs song
read books about pottying at bedtime when they are not pressured to go.
