I own my own flooring business. Everyone says vinyl (LVT or LVP) is a better product than laminate, but... Vinyl is waterproof, yes, well no, only on the top and not at the edges or underneath. If there is a flood your "waterproof" vinyl still needs to be replaced if the standing water gets underneath it. There is no way to disinfect your vinyl floor well enough to prevent mold and mildew from occurring. And did you know there are laminates that are water resistant too? Some up to 72 hours! If you get the right laminate it is a WAY better product than 85% of the vinyl flooring products out there.
Vinyl flooring can dent (had one job where the floor dented the 1st day the couch was put on it), tear, gouge, discolor and give off high VOCs (cancer causing fumes). Once the flooring is torn or scratched you can't repair it simply. You cannot use rubber backed rugs or mats, what?! There are a few vinyl products I do recommend, ask and I will let you know which ones. I would much rather have a product that is not going to easily get scratched from daily wear and tear.
The laminates I prefer are AC4 and above grading and have an aluminum oxide coating. That coating is virtually indestructible (same stuff they use on fighter jets🛬). If you buy the right product, you will get amazing, long lasting results. Vinyl is a hot ticket, it can be made cheaply and sold for a high profit. I predict in a few years it will go the way that linoleum did in the 80s. Vinyl has started to lose favor Buyer beware!
